I've just downloaded and run a recovery tool and it doesn't appear to be on there - so I guess I'll have to rebuild
What did you download? I hope you didn't download it to the system the VM was deleted from!
On Windows systems I use Ontrack Easy Recovery Pro booted from a WinPE Disc and have recovered may files, including VM's however the trick is to immediately stop using the system and reboot it from recovery media!
