So HA does work as long as as vcenter is running (as far as i understand). how do i make sure that vcenter is always running in the case of host failure?

Not sure I am following you, but even in the case when vCenter Server is an appliance and thus running virtually should vSphere HA restart it when a host goes down. Did you see any specific error messages in the log file afterwards?
Which version are you running?
