Using more than 8GB of ram for ESXi

I am using a Mac Mini with 16GB ram.  When I installed ESXi, the most ram it will allow me to assign to the VM that ESXi is running in is 8GB.  Is there a way that I can assign it at least 12GB of memory so I can run some really intensive lab situations.
